Day 24,25 & 26 – Puffins and More Puffins

July 10 – Day 24

We moved from the house to Lockston Campground. On the way to the campground, we stopped in Elliston, the most famous of puffin viewing sites in Newfoundland. We loved watching them and that day the crowds were respectful of the puffins (we’ve heard some stories that always isn’t the case). I never knew how entertaining puffins are. We kept about 10 feet away from them, these photos are zoomed in.

Our next adventure took us to Dungeon Provincial Park in Bonavista to look at a collapsed sea cave with arches. This was the first time we ran into a bus load of senior citizens on a group trip. We didn’t stay long because we wanted to get ahead of them, as they were headed to the same next stop.

Our final sightseeing stop of the day was Bonavista Lighthouse. There we saw the lighthouse, a few puffins, at least three humpback whales and an iceberg, a kind gentleman pointed out to me. It was way off in the distance, but we decided it counts as an iceberg sighting.

Our last stop of the day was at Lovely Grand Bakeshop in Trinity. OMG the desserts were out of this world. We looked at the lunch and dinner menu and decided to return the next day for lunch.

Finally we could get into the campground. We set up the tent, had dinner and called it a night.

July 11 – Day 25

Today was the day to hike the famous and popular Skerwink Trail. We’ve been on some incredible trails here and this one didn’t rate within our top three.. We keep telling ourselves we went to early in the day and the sun wasn’t at the right angle.

We then headed into Trinty to do part of the Gun Hill. We just went to the viewpoint that overlooks the town.

While in Trinity we stopped at Aunt Sarah’s Chocolate. We needed a chocolate fix and it was near the harbor, where we discovered a sea arch. It was really good chocolate.

We had lunch at the Lovely Grand Bakeshop. It was delicious.

The lunch fueled us for our next adventure. We thought we would just walk to see “The Chimney” and turn around. It took us over 2 hours because we discovered puffins. Shhhh I’m calling this the secret stash of puffins. The trail was great and not just because of the puffins.

We could have spent more time here. I think if it was the first hike of the day, we might have spent the morning here, then run out to get lunch and we would have returned with lunch to spend the afternoon with them.

July 12- Day 26

It was time to pack up camp and move to our next location, about 3 hours away. This spot marks the beginning of our trek back to where we started our Newfoundland adventures. It was just a drive day with one swing though a small town. The town had a beautiful old graveyard next to the sea.

Tomorrow is undecided, but I’m sure we find some adventure.
