Day 1 & 2 Canadian Maritimes

We left Connecticut late Tuesday afternoon to Portland, ME. Typically the drive takes a little over three hours. Yesterday it was over four hours. We only stopped at the first rest area in Maine and I spied the signs the Governor of Maine had printed to make Canadians feel welcomed.

We woke up to clouds. Our entire day was spent driving in fog on Wednesday. Our end destination was St. John, New Brunswick.

Our first stop was in Bangor, Maine to pick up lunch for later in the day. Harvest Moon Cafe was a quirky little place, that we felt at home ordering from. The food was amazing. We parked on a cute side street, an unexpected delight when we looked up to see the umbrellas.

Next stop was MooseHorn National Wildlife Refuge in Baring, Maine. We hoped to eat outside at a picnic table and get a hike or two in but…The wet foggy weather brought out the jumbo sized mosquitos, we weren’t going to have lunch, we were lunch for these guys. We hopped back in the car and drove to Vose Pond to sit and have lunch inside the car.

After leaving this area , 10 minutes later we were crossing the border. Had a lovely chat with the border agent. Found out his mom and sister are teachers. Mike asked if he got the teacher stare and finger a lot growing up. He chuckled and said yes. I think we earned a few bonus points with him or he felt sorry for us for the country we live in.

Our drive to St. John was a foggy the entire way.

We are overnighting in St. John New Brunswick. We went to dinner at Cask and Kettle Irish Gastropub. I have maternal relatives that are Irish and from New Brunswick, it only seemed appropriate to be at an Irish pub. The beer and food were excellent.

Tomorrow we are off to Nova Scotia. Hoping it is a little less foggy and the mosquitoes aren’t as large as the ones in New Brunswick.
