Day 17 – Wrong Turn or Rather Missed the Turn

I should have known when my different pancake recipe (not my Sunday one) had a massive mishap of sticking to the pan that the day might have it ups and downs.

I did make the pancakes look good by submerging them under a ton of fruit, so salvaged that.

We decided today would be the day to visit the Kalinago Territory and see the village that was recreated. The Kalinago were the first inhabitants of Dominica. Then you know who came along(Columbus) and set the stage for destroying their way of life, then the British came took their land and if you know history you know how much they lost. It is now a protected territory and people.

This drive was typical of a drive anywhere here, short distance but long in time.

Whelp that one and half hour turned into almost two hours because we didn’t make the correct turn, we kept straight. We drove 4 miles on a road that was being rebuilt. It was horrible. We even drove past the site because the gps had lost signal and all three of us were confused. We turned around, found the place and proceeded to it.

We passed a house we almost rented because of the view. After that drive and all sargassum that was washing in with its putrid smell, we felt relieved we didn’t do it.

The territory had a short loop walk, showing some of their buildings that were represented of what might have existed with the first group of people. The walk had some great views of the ocean and in one picture you can see the almost rental house.

The Kalinago are expert basket weavers, so we picked up two small containers that will be packable.

We really thought with the drive and that road was it worth it? If we had a road that was paved, yes worth it, but with that drive no…

Walking out we both dreaded the drive back. We started driving and a guy was waving at us. We waved back. He wasn’t waving he was telling us to turn around to the road to the left. Another wrong move. We turned around and found the correct road that we were supposed to take going. This road had beautiful views and saved us so much time and frustration. So if we had taken that road on the way in then yes the place is worth a visit.

We had to stop at the farmers market for some more vegetables for dinner tonight. Tomorrow we are returning to the market because more vendors will be there and hopefully the lady with the lettuce won’t be sold out.

So we took a wrong turn or two. Eventually things turned around for us today. We have a tropical wave coming in tonight, hopefully it doesn’t rain so much we can’t go waterfall chasing tomorrow.
