Day 4 – People and Food

The day had a plan that once again focused on food.

I follow a gardener on socials (Soma Garden) and he posted he had fresh dragonfruit for sale. I contacted him to figure out how to get some. Vaughn told us his mother has them at her house and just give her a call, let her know when we are coming by and she would have them for us. This was shaping up to be another adventure for us.

Our first stop though was at bank. Mike chatted with a local Ross, about the impending storm, where to get a whisk and general chit chat. Here’s what we learned, just watch out for land/mud slides when traveling, go to James Store for a whisk and the river cruise that gets hawked to us isn’t worth it. Ross was kind enough to give us his number and told us if we need anything to call him.

We set off for our next two stops.

After trying a new grocery store, I made the call to Vaughn’s mom. She gave us directions and off we went to her home. We thought it would be a little awkward and I must admit I did feel like we were imposing on her. Well it wasn’t awkward and I needn’t be worried about imposing on her. Her son had given her red and white dragonfruit to sell.

I said 4 would be enough. Mike vetoed that and we ended up with 9 pounds of dragonfruit. Anybody have some dragonfruit recipes that want to share?

Our next stop was the Portsmouth farmers market and the James store. We found the James store and they had a whisk (thanks Ross). We had to purchase a whisk in South Dakota, which I suggested we take with us and it would become our traveling whisk (we love ricotta pancakes and need a whisk). We left it in South Dakota and hoped we would have one here. We gambled and lost on that one.

We had a few food items to pick up and them some items we didn’t need, but the fruit called to us. The banana man from our first day, recognized us and came right over to chat. We told him we would see him next week for more bananas.

After that stop we returned to the rental. We prepped for dinner and Mike made a dragonfruit dessert. After that we headed down the road to take a dip in the water. Starting tomorrow the seas will be to rough to get into it due to the storm coming in. This is our first black sand beach.

After the refreshing dip, we walked up the street to see the church that we can see the steeple from our rental. As we walked two local fisherman were securing their boat. The welcomed us to Dominica and told us a bit about the local church. I oohed over the mango tree we passed. One of the sailors found three ripe ones, offering them to us.

Dinner was marlin fish tacos. Dessert was a starfruit and dragonfruit mixture soaked in a lime simple syrup.

We don’t know the plan for tomorrow. For the next few days decisions will be made around Hurricane Beryl.
