Day 3 – First Hikes of the Trip

The morning feel was the idyllic tropical island vibe.

Today’s adventure had our staying on the North end of the island to explore a waterfall and a cold sulphur spring.

I was actually brave enough to look at the views, as Mike drove.

Our first stop was at Bwa Nef Falls. This was one of the best waterfall experiences we’ve ever had. The trail was enveloped in breadfruit trees and lush vegetation. As we walked along the trail, I heard a scurry sound. No it wasn’t a creature, but the owner of the land farming dasheen on one of the hills.

The man was incredibly kind to us, telling us about his farming, letting us know we are very safe in Dominica and welcomed us to visit his land. He did tell us at the top of the waterfall two large boulders were wedged and not to be worry about them falling on us. We paid him some money to honor the use of his land and waterfall.

As we rounded the corner to see the waterfall, it was breathtaking.

After this adventure, we stopped at Cold Sulphur Springs. This was a short jaunt to see cold sulphur springs. Water bubbles from a volcanic crater spring up within Morne Aux Diables. The science lesson is sulphuric gas fills the air and the rock formation is marked by eerie grey, white and clay porous stone. It also stinks like rotten eggs.

At the springs, before you go down to see it, is a picnic area. We ate our lunch inside a volcanic crater.

We made our way to Portsmouth to stop at the roadside markets to pick up more fruits and vegetables. One woman grabbed me and said watermelon and I just followed her. She was so sweet and threw in a cucumber with the other items we purchased.

The big news, we found JELLY. We can know have peanut butter and guava sandwiches!

This afternoon was nap, work on photos and Mike was trying to figure out how to get the mangos down from the huge tree by the rental. We have no mango picker and they are so high up, they would need a truck lift. Maybe the possibility of a hurricane Monday and Tuesday will knock the mangoes down for us.

We had our perquisite rain shower before sunset. Sunset was a sight to behold.

Tomorrow is promised to be a day of adventure that involves dragonfruit.
